Chapter 9 - The True Family Feast

Two weeks later, the sun set in brilliant shades of gold and crimson over the rolling hills of Valley Center.
In the backyard of Hannah and Luke’s sprawling Spanish-style ranch, long wooden tables were decorated with rustic clay pots of blooming marigolds, hand-woven runners, and glowing string lights suspended from ancient pepper trees.
Over fifty guests filled the lawn: Central Market produce farmers, cheese makers, logistics drivers, neighborhood friends, and Charles Weaver.
In the center of the patio stood a giant clay comal and copper pots bubbling with fresh seafood soup, roasted carnitas, handmade corn tortillas, and fresh avocado salsa.
Charles sat at the head of the long wooden table, wearing a comfortable linen shirt, smiling with pure, uninhibited joy as his grandchildren laughed and played soccer across the lawn.
Hannah walked over, carrying a steaming bowl of seafood soup, setting it gently in front of Charles with a warm smile.
"Happy 80th birthday, Charles," Hannah said softly. "This time, with no interruptions."
Charles took a spoonful of the rich, fragrant broth, closing his eyes as tears of deep gratitude welled in his eyes.

"It is the best meal in the world, my dear," Charles whispered, taking Hannah’s hand and squeezing it tightly. "Because it was made with love."
The entire table raised their glasses in a thunderous toast: "To Hannah! To Charles! To real family!"
