Chapter 5 - Charles's Quiet Stand

While chaos consumed Jeffrey and Gemma, an entirely different conversation was taking place inside the Weaver family home in La Jolla.

Rosalie was pacing the living room floor, frantically calling real estate lawyers, while Charles sat quietly by the garden window, sipping black coffee.

"Charles, stop sitting there like an old fool!" Rosalie shrieked, slamming her phone onto the glass coffee table. "Your worthless son and his market wife are trying to destroy our children! You need to call Luke right now and demand that Hannah sign a waiver dismissing all of these ridiculous notices!"

Charles set his ceramic mug down with slow, deliberate precision.

He looked at the woman he had been married to for fifty-two years. For half a century, he had watched Rosalie treat anyone outside her shallow social circle as disposable servants. He had stayed quiet to keep peace in the home, but watching her spit on Hannah's food and insult her deceased parents had snapped the last thread of his patience.

"No, Rosalie," Charles said, his voice quiet, deep, and unyielding.

Rosalie stopped pacing, staring at him in disbelief. "What did you just say?"

"I said no," Charles repeated, standing up to his full height. "For twelve years, Hannah cooked for this family, visited you in the hospital when you had pneumonia, and brought warmth into this cold house. And every single week, you, Jeffrey, and Gemma treated her like dirt beneath your shoes."

"She is a market vendor!" Rosalie yelled.

"She is a self-made woman with more dignity, grace, and honor in her little finger than you have in your entire body," Charles said coldly. "And today, I am packing my bags."

"Where do you think you're going?!"

"I am moving into the guest cottage at Luke and Hannah’s ranch in Valley Center," Charles stated firmly. "And my personal pension trust is transferring to Luke's management tomorrow morning. You can spend your remaining years dining alone in your empty house, Rosalie."
