Chapter 4 - The Panic in Century City

By 8:00 AM on Monday morning, the full magnitude of the disaster hit Gemma’s law firm.
Gemma arrived at the Century City glass tower to find building security badges deactivated at the main turnstiles. In the lobby, senior managing partner Richard Vance was frantically arguing on the phone with corporate property managers.
"Gemma!" Vance barked when he spotted her. "What the hell is going on with your family?!"
"Richard, please, it was a personal misunderstanding—"
"A personal misunderstanding?!" Vance roared, slamming a legal notice against the reception counter. "The building owner just served our firm with an emergency lease audit! They are invoking the moral disrepute and tenant conduct clause because a named partner was involved in a documented assault and public harassment incident on commercial premises owned by the trust!"
"Assault?!" Gemma gasped.
"The security footage from L'Orangerie on Saturday night was submitted to the property board at dawn," Vance said, his face purple with rage. "Your husband raised his hand to the owner of this entire twenty-four-story building, and you stood by mocking her! If Sterling Pacific Holdings terminates our lease, our firm loses thirty million dollars in institutional corporate retainers!"
Across town at the medical center, Jeffrey’s morning was equally catastrophic.

He arrived at his clinic to find an emergency inspection team from the Department of Health and the master landlord reviewing the building’s specialized equipment permits. Because Jeffrey had consistently delayed maintenance fees while spending clinic funds on luxury sports cars, the property management firm issued a mandatory 48-hour cure notice: pay $450,000 in deferred commercial compliance fees or vacate the surgical suite immediately.
The golden children of the Weaver dynasty were watching their empires crumble within forty-eight hours.
