Chapter 6 - Unmasking the Groom

By Monday afternoon, the news of the Blackwell Holdings collapse had hit the front pages of every financial newspaper in the state. The golden boy, Carter Blackwell, was no longer the city’s most eligible bachelor; he was a liability.

I stood in the glass-walled conference room of my firm, watching the live news broadcast. The reporters were standing outside the Blackwell headquarters, describing the massive federal raid that was currently underway.

The door to the conference room opened, and Carter walked in. He didn't have his smug grin anymore. His hair was messy, his tie was crooked, and he looked like a man who had spent the last forty-eight hours realizing he was completely powerless.

"Eleanor," Carter pleaded, his voice cracking as he approached the table. "Please. We can settle this. I'll sign the divorce papers. I'll give Emily whatever she wants. Just tell the SEC that the Phoenix Trust was my father's doing, not mine. My mother... she's an old woman, she can't go to prison."

I looked at him, my expression completely blank. "Your mother spent twenty years systematically stealing from her own employees, Carter. And you spent the last five years helping her cover it up so you could buy sports cars and look down on my daughter."

"I was just doing what I was told!" he shouted, his desperation turning into anger. "You're destroying our family name over a stupid joke at a wedding! It was just a uniform, Eleanor! It was a joke!"

"Humiliation is never a joke, Carter," I said, stepping closer to him. "You wanted to teach my daughter her place. You wanted her to know she was beneath you. But the only thing beneath us right now is your family's integrity."

I opened my laptop, displaying the confession signed by Julian Vance.

"This is Julian's statement," I said. "He has already detailed how you personally authorized the transfer of three million dollars from the pension fund to pay off your own credit card debts last month. You're not just a bad husband, Carter. You're a thief."

Carter stared at the screen, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. The final mask of his wealthy, untouchable persona had been completely ripped away.
