Chapter 10 - A Clean Horizon

One year after the wedding disaster.
The afternoon sun was warm and bright, casting golden light over the beautifully landscaped gardens of the Hayes Foundation—a non-profit Emily and I had established to provide housing and education grants for the families of the construction workers who had been defrauded by the Blackwells.
The patio was filled with laughter, music, and the delicious scent of a summer barbecue. Many of the retired workers we had helped restore their pensions to were there, chatting and enjoying the sunny day with their families.

I walked up to her, handing her a glass of iced tea.
"A beautiful day for a celebration, isn't it?" I smiled.
"The perfect day, Mom," Emily said, wrapping her arm around my waist and leaning her head against my shoulder. "I was just thinking about how different my life is now. A year ago, I was standing in that ballroom, crying over a gray uniform."
"You survived the storm, sweetheart," I said, kissing her forehead. "And you built something beautiful from the wreckage."
"We did," she corrected me, looking out at the happy families in the garden. "We did it together."

We had closed the ledger on the Blackwells, and our new story was just beginning.
