Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Accounts

The morning after the wedding disaster, my office at Hayes Forensic Analysis was dead quiet. The sun was barely rising over the city skyline, casting long, cool shadows across my desk.

Daniel, my assistant, walked in with a steaming cup of black coffee and a fresh stack of financial transcripts.

"The Blackwell lawyers have been calling since 4:00 AM, Eleanor," Daniel said, setting the mug down. "Vivian is threatening to sue you for slander, tortious interference, and about five other things her legal team made up over breakfast."

"Let them threaten," I said, taking a slow sip. "Did the SEC freeze go through?"

"Airtight," Daniel smiled. "The moment we submitted the transaction logs from their 'Phoenix Trust' in Switzerland, the federal agents executed the emergency asset freeze. Blackwell Holdings can't move a single dollar. They can't pay their staff, they can't clear their construction loans, and they certainly can't pay their lawyers."

The "Phoenix Trust" was the ghost in their accounts. It was a shadow fund that Vivian and Carter’s late father had used to hide over fifty million dollars in embezzled pension funds from their own employees' retirement accounts. They had spent decades using that stolen money to buy their mansions, their yachts, and the diamond necklaces Vivian wore to look down her nose at my daughter.

I pulled up the file on my monitor. The screen displayed a complex matrix of shell companies, all leading back to a single authorized signature: Vivian Blackwell.

"They thought they were untouchable because of their name," I muttered. "They forgot that names don't matter on a balance sheet."

My phone buzzed. It was Emily.

"Mom," she sobbed, her voice sounding small and terrified. "Carter... he’s packing his things. He’s screaming at me, saying you ruined his life. He said if I don't get you to drop the foreclosure, he'll make sure I'm left with absolutely nothing."

"Stay where you are, Emily," I said, my voice hardening. "Do not argue with him. I’m sending Daniel with a security team to pick you up. Your marriage to that boy is over, but your new life is just beginning."
