Chapter 1 - THE COFFEE SHOP REUNION AND THE REJECTED JOB

The laughter at Miller’s Creamery was loud enough to turn three heads at the adjacent tables, but I remained frozen in the cracked red booth. Ten years had passed since high school, yet Jasmine Martinez had matured not a single day. Sitting across from me in her influencer glamour—fake lips, heavy makeup, and a tired desperation hidden beneath designer clothes—she looked like someone trying desperately to hold onto an illusion. I had offered her a legitimate administrative position at my law firm paying sixty-five thousand dollars with full health benefits and paid vacation, hoping to help an old friend. Instead, she shoved her phone across the sticky table, displaying outdated Instagram photos of rooftop parties and Miami pools to prove she didn't need my "charity".

Our shared history stretched back to freshman year when Jasmine was the untouchable golden girl and I was the awkward, overweight "smart friend" who served as her emotional safety net. Even then, she ensured I knew my place, famously introducing me to guys by telling them they'd never have to worry about their girlfriends being stolen by me. When I stood up to leave after her sharp insults regarding my boyfriend Nathan and her arrogant projection that he would like her better, her smile vanished into raw fury. I walked out into the afternoon air believing it was just another toxic high school flashback, completely unaware that she viewed my success as a personal theft of the spotlight.
