THE SILENT MARK / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3 - Whispering ShadowsWithin twenty minutes, police cars pulled up to the Pedregal mansion, red and blue lights flashing against the cold marble walls. Lorena was placed in handcuffs, screaming threats and denials as she was escorted down the grand staircase.

With the device removed and a soothing topical antibiotic applied, little Leo finally fell into a peaceful, pain-free sleep for the first time in six months.

Roberto sat at his son’s bedside, holding the boy’s tiny hand, tears streaming down his face. "I almost lost him, María," he choked out, looking up at the nanny. "I trusted the wrong person, and I almost let my son suffer to death."

"Children carry their truth in their bodies, Señor," María said gently. "When adults lie, children bear the weight."

While Leo rested, detectives began searching Lorena’s private quarters. What they found went far deeper than a simple case of stepmother cruelty. Lorena had been funneling millions of dollars out of Roberto’s estate, transferring funds to offshore accounts in Switzerland.

She had been slowly debilitating Leo to ensure Roberto’s focus remained broken, intending to eventually have Leo declared permanently incompetent so she could claim full guardianship over his multi-million-dollar inheritance trust left by his late biological mother, Elena.
