THE SILENT MARK / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1 - The Unseen AgonyThe silence inside Roberto’s mansion shattered before sunrise.

The house, a cold brutalist palace built high in Pedregal, was usually so quiet in the early morning that even footsteps seemed disrespectful. Marble floors. Glass walls. Steel staircases. Rooms so large they made grief echo.

Then came the scream.

It tore through the hallway like something no child should ever make.

Seven-year-old Leo was in his bed, twisting against silk sheets, his small hands gripping the fabric with desperate force. Sweat shone across his forehead. His face had gone pale. His back arched in pain while his father stood beside him, helpless and shaking.

Roberto, one of the wealthiest men in the country, had built financial empires, bought companies, negotiated with ministers, and survived boardrooms full of predators. But none of that mattered when his only son was crying in front of him and no one could explain why.

A team of elite neurologists stood around the room with glowing tablets, reviewing scans they had studied a dozen times before. “There is no visible injury,” one doctor said carefully. “His brain scans are clear.” To the doctors, it was a severe psychosomatic condition, possibly tied to trauma after the death of Leo’s biological mother. To Roberto, it was torture.

At the doorway stood María, the new nanny. She had been hired for night watch and cleaning, nothing more. She was quiet, with dark steady eyes and hands marked by years of hard work. In that sterile room, surrounded by monitors and tablets, María saw what the machines did not. Leo’s sweat was too cold. His pain did not move randomly—it returned again and again to one place.

Leo lifted his shaking hand to one precise spot at the crown of his skull. His eyes met María's, pleading for help.

When María pointed it out, the stepmother, Lorena, snapped, "Do not touch him!" But Roberto had seen the boy's gesture.

María approached slowly and gently parted Leo’s hair. There, hidden beneath his thick hair, was a small, inflamed spot on his scalp. Roberto’s voice dropped in absolute fury as he looked at his pale wife: “Lorena, why didn’t you want anyone touching his head?”
