Chapter 8 - The Commercial AuditArthur Vance pulled the final document from his leather bag—a heavy white envelope stamped with the official seal of the State District Attorney's Office.

Marcus Sterling looked at the envelope, his hands trembling. “What is that, Arthur?”

“That,” Arthur stated firmly, “is a formal criminal complaint for grand larceny, bank fraud, and illegal offshore tax evasion regarding the twenty-two thousand dollars siphoned into the Nevis escrow account.”

Simone’s mother let out a shrill scream. “You can’t put my daughter in prison! She’s your wife!”

“She was my wife, Eleanor,” I corrected her, picking up my pen. “Simone has ten minutes to sign a complete, unconditional waiver of all claims to my assets, my company, and the townhouse. In exchange, I will decline to pursue criminal prosecution for the escrow transfers.”

Sterling turned to Simone, his voice urgent and harsh. “Sign it, Simone. Sign it right now! If this goes to a criminal grand jury, you are facing federal wire fraud charges!”

Simone wept hysterically, her hands trembling so violently she could barely hold the pen.

She pressed the ink to the paper and signed her name across the bottom line: Simone Wynn.

She pushed the paper back across the table, looking up at me with red, swollen eyes, pleading for a crumb of mercy.

“Caleb... please,” Simone sobbed. “Where am I supposed to live? I don't have anywhere to go...”

I picked up the signed agreement, folded it neatly, and placed it inside my inner suit pocket.

“Andre Tilman has a nice Mercedes,” I said quietly. “Maybe he’ll let you stay on his couch.”

I turned my back, adjusted my jacket, and walked out of the conference room into the bright morning sunlight.
