Chapter 5 - The Underground Bunker

We did not go to my Brooklyn brownstone.
The motorcade diverted north, slipping into an underground freight tunnel beneath an abandoned logistics warehouse in Long Island City. The heavy blast doors sealed shut behind us, locking out the world.
Inside was Ethan’s private command redoubt—a subterranean medical and tactical facility equipped with state-of-the-art trauma surgery suites, biometric security, and full satellite uplink systems.
A private trauma surgeon and two nurses rushed to treat Ethan’s shoulder wound.
"Lie down on the examination table, Bella," Ethan ordered through gritted teeth as the surgeon disinfected his bullet graze. "Doctor, run an immediate fetal ultrasound and check her blood pressure."
I didn't argue. I lay back on the medical table, the cool ultrasound gel spreading over my exposed belly.
The monitor flickered to life.
Within seconds, the room filled with the rhythmic, thunderous galloping sound of our daughter’s heartbeat: thump-thump, thump-thump, thump-thump.
The pediatric nurse smiled warmly. "Fetal heart rate is strong at 145 beats per minute. Amniotic fluid levels are normal. No signs of placental trauma or distress."
I let out a long, shuddering breath, covering my face as tears of relief finally broke through.
Ethan stepped away from the surgeon, ignoring the gauze being taped to his shoulder. He walked over to the edge of the ultrasound table, his eyes fixed on the black-and-white screen displaying the tiny outline of our daughter's profile and curled fingers.
Slowly, hesitantly, Ethan reached out his hand, looking at me with unspoken question.
I nodded softly.
Ethan pressed his large, calloused palm against the bare curve of my stomach.
Right at that moment, our daughter gave a strong, distinct kick directly against his palm.

Ethan’s breath hitched in his chest. His eyes filled with raw, unvarnished tears that he didn't bother to wipe away.
"She has your strength, Bella," Ethan whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. "I swear on my life, no one will ever touch this child."
