Chapter 1 - The Meeting on Madison Avenue

The brass-accented glass doors of L’Enfant Royal, the most fortified and opulent nursery boutique on Madison Avenue, glided open with a quiet, pneumatic hiss. Inside, towering crystal chandeliers reflected across polished marble floors, illuminating custom hand-carved cribs and silk bassinet displays worth more than private jets. This was not a store for ordinary mothers; it was a sanctuary built for Manhattan’s elite dynasties, oligarchs, and powerful families who required armed escorts just to buy cashmere baby blankets.
I walked toward the showroom floor, resting my right hand beneath the prominent curve of my eight-month pregnant belly. My camel-wool coat hung open over a champagne bodycon dress, framing the unmistakable silhouette of late pregnancy.
For seven months, I had lived as a ghost.
I was Isabella Bennett again, living in a nondescript brownstone in Brooklyn, paying cash at local bodegas, and avoiding high-definition street cameras. I had fled the gilded cage of my marriage to Ethan Romano—the billionaire CEO of Romano Global Logistics and the undisputed head of New York’s most feared private security and syndicate syndicate empire. I had loved Ethan with a fierce, blinding passion, but the endless bloodshed, the threats to my family, and the dark world he ruled had forced me to disappear the moment my pregnancy test turned positive.
I had come to this boutique for one thing: a reinforced, steel-framed heirloom oak crib with integrated biometric locks that could protect my unborn daughter in any home.
As my fingers brushed the smooth, polished wood of the crib, a low, familiar baritone cut through the quiet classical music playing overhead.
"The white birch model has ballistic-grade side panels, Victoria. It suits the estate."
Every drop of blood drained from my face. My breath caught in my throat.
I turned around slowly.
Standing twenty feet away was Ethan Romano. Dressed in a bespoke black wool overcoat, open-collar charcoal shirt, and tailored trousers, he was as lethal, commanding, and dangerously handsome as the day I walked out of his life.
Clinging possessively to his left arm was Victoria Sinclair—an icy, blonde high-society heiress and daughter of a federal district judge. She wore a tailored blush-pink power suit, her diamond-encrusted fingers resting over Ethan’s bicep.
Behind them stood three towering personal bodyguards in dark suits, their earpieces glowing with blue indicator lights.
Victoria's gaze drifted down from my face, landing directly on my swollen belly. Her blue eyes widened in shock, followed by a slow, calculating smirk.
"Well," Victoria purred, her manicured hand tightening on Ethan’s arm. "Isn't this an unexpected reunion?"
Ethan didn't look at Victoria. He didn't blink. His dark, piercing eyes locked onto my stomach.
I watched the exact second he did the mental arithmetic. Seven months since our separation. The dates. The undeniable timing.
"Bella..." Ethan whispered, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly register that sent a shiver through my spine.
He took one slow, predatory step toward me.

At that exact second, the lead bodyguard behind Ethan spotted my hand reaching into my coat pocket to clutch my keys. In an instant, the guard drew his Glock, aiming the barrel directly at my chest, while the other two men moved into tactical perimeter formation.
The boutique went dead silent.
