Chapter 8 - The Warehouse Ambush

The following night, the storm over the Bellweather River broke with terrifying fury. Lightning split the midnight sky, illuminating the skeletal iron framework of the abandoned textile mill downtown—the very building Adrian had gifted Clara as a blank canvas. Clara had insisted on going there to secure her historical design notebooks before the storm flooded the lower levels. Adrian had reluctantly agreed, surrounding her with an elite tactical security detail led by his most trusted enforcer, Glenn Cooper. They arrived at the mill in a convoy of armored SUVs, the tires splashing through puddles in the cavernous, dimly lit loading bay. "Stay close to Glenn, Clara," Adrian instructed via encrypted radio from his downtown headquarters, unable to leave his command post while his shipping terminals were under coordinated attack. "We're sweeping the perimeter now." Clara clutched her leather satchel of sketches, walking briskly through the echoing concrete hall filled with old wooden looms and draped plastic drop cloths. Suddenly, the overhead emergency lights flickered and died, plunging the entire mill into pitch blackness. "Ambush! Get down!" Glenn roared, drawing his sidearm just as a deafening burst of automatic gunfire shattered the high glass windows above. Sparks showered down like fireworks as bullets ricocheted off the concrete pillars. "We're cut off! Back exit is blocked!" one of the guards shouted over the roar of thunder and gunfire. From the shadows of the loading docks, masked figures swarmed into the mill—Viktor Vance’s elite enforcers. They had tracked Clara here, knowing she was Adrian’s weak point. Glenn fired back, taking down two attackers, but three more rushed them from the side aisle. Clara backed up against an old wooden cutting table, her heart hammering against her ribs, refusing to panic. One of the masked thugs lunged toward her, grabbing her arm and twisting her back against his chest with a cold steel knife pressed against her throat. "Drop your weapons, or the seamstress gets a new smile!" the thug screamed over the storm. Glenn froze, lowering his pistol as the tactical guards were swarmed and disarmed. Clara stared into the dark shadows, realizing she had walked straight into a slaughterhouse. But just as Viktor Vance’s men began to laugh in triumph, the massive steel front doors of the mill blew inward with an earth-shattering explosion. Splintered wood and twisted iron flew through the air as Adrian DeLuca’s personal armored SUV plowed directly into the center of the loading bay. Before the dust could settle, Adrian emerged from the wreckage like a wrathful god of vengeance, automatic rifle in hand, his face a mask of cold, lethal fury.
