Chapter 5 - An Unlikely Invitation

Before Clara could formulate a response to Adrian's startling admission, the front door chimed again, breaking the heavy tension in the room. A delivery courier rushed inside, holding a massive, flat black box tied with a silver ribbon and thrusting it toward Clara. "Sign here, please," the courier muttered. Clara signed mechanically, and the courier darted back out into the rain, leaving the oversized box resting directly on top of the oak cutting table. Molly peeked her head out from the back room like a curious kitten, her eyes wide. Adrian gestured toward the box with a slight nod of his chin. "Aren't you going to open it?" Clara narrowed her eyes at him, suspecting another grand gesture or aggressive display of wealth. "If this is another briefcase of cash or diamond earrings, I swear I will hit you with this measuring tape." Adrian chuckled—a low, genuine sound that transformed his austere features into something breathtakingly striking. "Open it, Clara. I promise there is no cash inside." Reluctantly, Clara untied the silver ribbon and lifted the heavy matte-black lid. Inside, resting on a bed of custom black velvet, was a stunning, hand-drawn architectural blueprint paired with rolls of rare, antique cream-colored silk and silver-threaded lace from Northern Italy. Clara’s breath caught in her throat. She loved historical textiles and architectural design, a passion she rarely shared with anyone outside her immediate family. She reached down, gently lifting the edge of the Italian silk, her fingers recognizing the superior weave instantly. "Where did you get this?" she whispered, forgetting for a moment who she was talking to. "The silk was salvaged from an 18th-century European estate liquidation handled by one of my shipping ports last month," Adrian explained, his tone shifting into something warm and attentive. "The blueprints are historical restoration plans for the old Bellweather textile mill downtown. I bought the property last year with plans to demolish it for luxury condos. But looking at your work... I realized the building deserves a better legacy." Clara looked up from the fabrics, her brown eyes searching his face for any sign of manipulation or mockery. There was none—only a quiet, steady resolve. "You’re offering me the textile mill contract?" she asked, astounded. "I’m offering you a blank canvas," Adrian corrected softly. "Turn it into a design studio, a workshop, a museum of fashion—whatever you want. I want you to have the space you deserve, Clara, not just this cramped corner shop." Clara stepped back from the table, crossing her arms once more as reality reasserted itself. "Mr. DeLuca, I don't know what kind of game you’re playing, but I built Bennett Bridal with my own hands. I don't need charity from a mob boss." "It’s not charity," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a register that brook no argument as he closed the distance between them. "It’s an investment. In someone who actually has a soul." Before Clara could think of a sharp retort, Adrian turned toward the door, pausing with his hand on the brass handle. "Dinner is at eight, Clara. My driver will pick you up at your apartment." "I didn't agree to dinner!" she called out. But the door had already clicked shut, leaving her alone in the quiet shop with rolls of priceless Italian silk and a heart hammering wildly against her ribs.
