Chapter 8 - Attack on the Sanctuary

The revelation turned the ballroo
m into a chaotic cauldron of whispers and panicked movement. But the drama wasn't finished.
From the side exit near the bar, four heavy-set men in dark trench coats stepped out onto the polished floor. They were the Detroit representatives Lily had contacted—ruthless enforcers who didn't care about forensic audits or family drama. They only cared about the thirty million dollars, and they saw Emma as the only collateral left.
The lead enforcer pulled a silver automatic pistol from his jacket, pointing it directly toward the stage where Emma stood. "We don't care about your paperwork, Volkov! The debt stands! The girl comes with us, or this room turns into a slaughterhouse!"
The guests screamed, rushing toward the main exits in a panicked stampede.
Adrian didn't even flinch. Before the enforcer could pull the trigger, Adrian stepped in front of Emma, his massive body completely shielding her from the line of fire.
"Down!" Adrian roared.
The glass chandeliers above the ballroom suddenly shattered into darkness as the main power lines were cut from the basement. The room erupted into a symphony of gunfire, shouting, and the heavy thudding of bodies hitting the floor.
Emma crouched near the podium, her arms wrapped tightly around Leo and Maya, who had been pulled down beside her by the enforcers. She closed her eyes, praying for the nightmare to end, listening to the dark, violent sounds of the world she had tried to run from.
Within less than sixty seconds, the emergency backup lights hummed to life, casting a pale green glow over the room.
The four Detroit enforcers were on the floor, disarmed, pinned down by Adrian's security detail. Adrian stood in the center of the stage, his charcoal jacket slightly dusty, a small, superficial scratch on his cheek dripping a single bead of blood. He held the silver pistol he had forcefully stripped from the lead enforcer, his face a mask of absolute, primitive rage.
He walked over to the lead enforcer, his boot pressing hard onto the man's chest. "Tell your boss in Detroit that the Carter debt has been purchased by the Volkov family," Adrian whispered, his voice dropping into a register that made the seasoned criminal tremble. "And tell him that if any man from Michigan ever sets foot in Georgia again, I will personally burn his entire empire to the ground. Now get out."
The men scrambled out of the room, leaving the ballroom quiet once again.

Adrian turned around slowly. He looked at Emma, who was standing up, checking the twins for any injuries. Leo looked up at his father, his gray eyes wide with a sudden, primitive pride. "You beat the bad guys, Daddy," the little boy whispered.
Adrian dropped the gun, walked over to them, and fell to one knee. He pulled his children against his chest, his broad shoulders shaking with a deep, emotional relief. And then, he looked up at Emma, his eyes pleading, soft, and completely transparent for the first time in his life. "It's over, Emma. The debt is gone. The threat is gone. You're safe."
