Chapter 3 - The Shadow in the Aisle

The walk from her classroom to the front office felt like the final march to a scaffold. Emma stopped outside the frosted glass door, her breath coming in shallow, ragged counts. She looked through the window pane.

Adrian Volkov sat in one of the cheap plastic office chairs, his immense frame looking completely out of place against the backdrop of construction paper cutouts and children's finger paintings. He wore a custom-tailored dark charcoal suit, his white shirt open at the collar, his broad shoulders filling the space with an aura of absolute danger. His dark hair was clipped short, threads of silver now catching the light at his temples, and his face looked harder, leaner, and infinitely more ruthless than it had five years ago.

When the door creaked open, Adrian stood up slowly. His slate-gray eyes locked onto hers, drilling into her with an intensity that made her knees want to buckle.

"Five years, Emma," he said, his voice a low, resonant rumble that made the school secretary look up in surprise. "You hid yourself well. Savannah was a clever choice."

Emma forced her chin up, hiding the frantic shaking of her hands behind her back. "What are you doing here, Adrian? You have no right to be here. This is my school. My life."

Adrian took a single, measured step toward her. The scent of his expensive cologne—sandalwood and tobacco—flooded her senses, dragging her back to a past she had buried. "Your life?" he murmured, a cold, dangerous smile touching his lips. "You took my ring, left me at the altar, and vanished into thin air. I spent two million dollars tracking every digital footprint, every cash withdrawal, every train station video feed in the country. Did you really think you could run from me forever?"

"I don't belong to you," Emma whispered fiercely, glancing at the secretary, who was suddenly very busy typing an email. "You chose my sister. Go back to Chicago. Go back to Lily."

Adrian’s expression shifted, a dark, venomous look crossing his features. "Lily is nothing to me. She never was. That night... that night wasn't what you thought it was, Emma. But we aren't here to discuss the past. We're here because of what my intelligence team found when they finally located your medical records from four years ago."

Before Emma could respond, the hallway door swung open.

"Miss Emma! Maya took the blue crayon!" Leo’s little voice bellowed as he stomped into the office, his twin sister trailing behind him with a stubborn pout.

Leo stopped dead in his tracks, his gray eyes looking up at the massive stranger standing next to his teacher. He instinctively stepped in front of Maya, his small fists clenching at his sides as he glared up at Adrian with a look of pure, unadulterated Volkov defiance.

Adrian froze. His entire body went rigid as he looked down at the boy. He stared at Leo’s dark wavy hair, at the sharp angle of his little jaw, and finally, into the slate-gray eyes that were a mirror image of his own. He looked at Maya, who was watching him with the exact same cautious, analytical stillness.

The ruthless mafia boss of Chicago looked as if he had just been shot through the chest.

"My God," Adrian whispered, his voice losing all of its controlled iron, dropping into a breathless, broken murmur. "Twins."
