Chapter 2 - Five Years in the Shadows

The sound of children’s laughter was the only thing that filled the bright, sunlit classroom of Willow Creek Elementary. Five years had passed since the night Emma Carter vanished into the dark corridors of Union Station, changing her name to Emma Vance and buying a one-way ticket to the quiet, coastal town of Savannah, Georgia.

Here, nobody knew the name Volkov. Nobody whispered about shipping docks, customs fraud, or the ruthless mafia enforcement that ran the Chicago underbelly. To the town, Emma was just the dedicated, soft-spoken kindergarten teacher who lived in a small, white-picket cottage on the edge of the salt marshes.

"Miss Emma! Look at my drawing!" a little voice chirped.

Emma smiled down at four-year-old Leo, looking into eyes that were an exact, piercing shade of slate gray—eyes she had spent five years trying to forget. Leo held up a paper covered in green and blue crayon marks. Beside him, his twin sister, Maya, was busy stacking wooden blocks with a quiet, intense focus that mirrored her brother's.

The twins were her miracles, born in a quiet Savannah hospital eight months after her flight. They were the living legacy of the love she thought she had shared with Adrian, a secret she had guarded with her very life. She had raised them on a meager teacher’s salary, scraping by, buying second-hand clothes, and spending her evenings reading them fairy tales in the quiet comfort of their cottage.

"It’s beautiful, Leo," Emma said, kneeling down on the colorful foam mat to ruffle his dark, wavy hair. "Is that a castle?"

"It’s a fort," Leo corrected proudly, his little jaw squaring in a way that made Emma’s chest tighten. "To keep the bad guys away from you and Maya."

Emma’s heart gave a familiar, aching squeeze. She stood up and walked toward the window, looking out over the quiet school parking lot where the Spanish moss hung low from the ancient live oaks. She had built a peaceful life here, but the vigilance never truly left her. Every unfamiliar car that slowed down near the school, every heavy footprint in the grocery store aisle, made her breath catch.

She knew how Adrian operated. She knew that the Volkov family never forgot a slight, and leaving a man like Adrian at the altar was a mortal insult to his pride. For the first two years, she had expected his dark-suited enforcers to kick her door down every night. But as the years bled into one another, she had allowed herself to believe that he had moved on. He had likely married Lily, unified their family interests, and forgotten all about the quiet schoolteacher who had dared to run away.

"Miss Vance?" the school secretary’s voice cracked over the intercom system, breaking her reverie. "You have a visitor in the main office. They say it’s regarding a family matter."

Emma’s blood instantly turned to liquid ice. Her hand clutched the edge of her desk so tightly her knuckles turned white. "A... a visitor?" she asked, her voice cracking.

"Yes. A Mr. Volkov. He says he’s an old friend."
