Chapter 7 - The Unveiling of Treason

The grand ballroom of the Savannah Mansion Hotel was a sea of black tuxedos and glittering diamonds. The local high society had turned out in full force, mingled with dark-suited men from the northern syndicates who stood near the bar, their eyes scanning the room with quiet, dangerous vigilance.
Richard Carter, Emma’s father, stood near the stage, his hands shaking slightly as he adjusted his bow tie. His face looked old, worn down by years of financial fraud and the constant, crushing fear of the Detroit debt.
"Welcome, ladies and gentlemen," Richard said into the microphone, his voice echoing through the massive room. "Tonight, the Carter Group is proud to host this annual gala to support regional development. We want to thank our corporate partners..."
"Let’s talk about your real partners, Richard."
The voice didn't come from a microphone, yet it cut through the murmuring crowd like a gunshot.
The heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom swung open. The ambient light of the room seemed to catch the edge of the entrance as a procession stepped inside.
Adrian Volkov walked first, his presence commanding absolute silence from the guests. But he wasn't looking at the crowd. He had his arm extended, his large hand holding the white-gloved hand of a woman who took the breath out of the entire room.
Emma walked beside him. She wore a stunning, custom-tailored black satin gown that flowed around her heels like liquid shadow. Her dark hair was styled in an elegant, sophisticated updo, revealing the sharp, beautiful lines of her jaw. Her face was pale, but her eyes were bright, clear, and filled with a fierce, unbreakable dignity. She looked every inch the Volkov matriarch she had been born to be.
And behind them, dressed in matching miniature white tuxedos, walked four-year-old Leo and Maya, their small hands held securely by two of Adrian's most trusted personal enforcers.
A collective gasp ripped through the crowd.
Lily, standing near the edge of the stage, clutched her champagne glass so tightly the crystal shattered, red wine spilling over her hands like blood. "Emma?" she whispered, horror dawning on her face.
Eleanor Carter stood up from the VIP table, her hands flying to her mouth. "My god... the children."
Adrian led Emma straight down the center aisle of the ballroom, the crowd parting before them like the Red Sea. He stepped onto the stage, smoothly taking the microphone from Richard’s pa
ralyzed hand.
"Five years ago, the Carter family told this city that my fiancée had run away after stealing thirty million dollars of allocation funds from their logistics firm," Adrian announced, his voice booming through the sound system, cold and absolute. "They told their creditors in Detroit that she was the architect of the fraud. They used her absence to cover their own corporate embezzlement."

He turned his slate-gray eyes onto Richard, who looked ready to collapse onto the floor.
"But tonight, the game is over," Adrian said, sliding a thick manila folder from his jacket and tossing it onto the podium. "Inside this folder are the certified forensic banking records from five years ago. They prove that the thirty million dollars went directly into a private offshore account registered to Richard and Lily Carter. Emma never touched a single penny. She was the scapegoat for her own family's treason."
