Chapter 5 - The Velvet Cage

The white-picket cottage on the marsh felt entirely different that evening. Outside, three black luxury SUVs sat idling under the live oaks, their headlights illuminating the gravel road. Dark-suited men stood at the corners of the property, their earpieces glinting in the twilight.

Adrian had moved into her kitchen with the authority of an invading army. He had ordered premium catering from the city, filling her small wooden table with fresh seafood, organic fruits, and artisan breads the twins had never seen before. He sat on a low stool, patiently showing Leo how to construct a complex plastic battleship, while Maya sat next to his knee, quietly drawing on his expensive legal notepad.

Emma stood near the sink, her hands holding a mug of tea she hadn't touched. "You can't stay here, Adrian. You're drawing too much attention. The neighbors..."

"The neighbors have been paid to look the other way, Emma," Adrian said without looking up from the plastic ship. "The house across the street has been leased by my security detail for the next six months. You are not safe here alone anymore. Not until I clean up the mess your family made."

"I don't want your money, and I don't want your world," Emma said, her voice tight with a mixture of anger and building dependency. "We were fine before you showed up."

Adrian stood up slowly, towering over the small kitchen. He walked over to her, his movements smooth and deliberate. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a heavy, dark blue velvet box. He laid it flat on the counter beside her tea.

"Open it," he commanded softly.

Emma hesitated, then opened the lid. Inside lay her original engagement ring—the flawless, emerald-cut diamond she had left on the mahogany table five years ago. It had been cleaned, polished, and shone with an icy brilliance.

"I kept it in my safe every single night," Adrian said, his slate-gray eyes boring into hers. "I didn't let Lily touch it. I didn't let anyone look at it. You think I brought you into my world to use you, Emma? I brought you in because you were the only clean, true thing I had ever touched in my miserable life. I was a monster long before I met you, but next to you, I wanted to be a man."

He took a step closer, his breath warm against her forehead. "Your family thinks they can sell you to Detroit to clear their corporate fraud. They think they can take my children away from me. Tomorrow night, there is a private charity gala at the Savannah Mansion Hotel. Your parents and Lily are the guest hosts—paid for by my rivals."

May you like

He reached out, his fingers gently lifting her chin so she was forced to look into the ruthless iron of his gaze.

"We are going to that gala, Emma," Adrian whispered, a dark, victorious promise in his voice. "You are going to wear the dress I bought you. And you are going to watch me dismantle the people who betrayed you, piece by piece, until the entire world knows the truth."
