THE QUEEN OF SAN RAFAEL / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5 - The Arrival by HelicopterThe Royal Marbella Golf Club was bathed in warm afternoon sunlight. High-rise palm trees framed the flawless green lawn, where thirty former graduates gathered in tailored suits and designer cocktail dresses. Champagne glasses clinked, and fake laughter echoed over the jazz music played by a live quartet.

Patricia stood near the center terrace wearing an expensive black dress, holding a glass of vintage Dom Pérignon. Rodrigo stood beside her, looking nervous as he repeatedly checked his phone for news on his company’s bank loan.

"Is the scholarship girl really coming?" one of Patricia's friends giggled. "I heard she works as an assistant somewhere in North London."

"I hope she wore something respectable," Patricia sneered lightly, sipping her drink. "I brought some extra cash just in case she needs help paying her taxi fare back to her parents' coffee shop."

Suddenly, a deep, rhythmic thrumming vibrated through the air. The grass on the fairway began to ripple as wind whipped across the lawn.

Guests shielded their eyes as a sleek, matte-black private Eurocopter descended from the blue sky, hovering over the central golf green. The powerful downwash knocked over patio umbrellas and spilled champagne glasses across white tablecloths.

The helicopter skidded onto the grass. The engine whined down, and the side door slid open smoothly.

A bodyguard in an immaculate black suit stepped down first, holding out a gloved hand.

A woman stepped out.

She wore a breathtaking, fitted black designer gown with a high leg slit, paired with custom diamond jewelry that caught the sunlight like shattered glass. Her honey-colored eyes were framed by dark designer sunglasses, and her dark blonde hair was styled in an effortless, regal updo.

The thirty former classmates froze. Champagne glasses slipped from numb fingers and shattered on the tile. Mouths hung open in stunned, absolute silence.

It was Valentina Ruiz.
