THE QUEEN OF SAN RAFAEL / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1 - The Invisible TargetTen years earlier, San Rafael Institute in Marbella was known as one of the most exclusive private academies on the Costa del Sol. Its white marble corridors, immaculate gardens, and elite sports facilities attracted the sons and daughters of businessmen, politicians, and celebrities. It was the kind of place where the future upper class was shaped—where friendships formed during recess could be worth more than a university degree.

Valentina Ruiz did not fit into that world.

She attended San Rafael on an academic scholarship that covered her tuition, but not the lifestyle. She didn’t wear designer boutique alterations of the school uniform; her mother had bought hers secondhand. She didn’t have the newest phone, nor did she receive a luxury sports car on her eighteenth birthday. Instead, Valentina lived in a small apartment above her parents’ modest café in the city center. Every afternoon, while her classmates escaped to yacht parties, Valentina pulled on a cotton apron and wiped tables.

Valentina moved through the hallways with her shoulders hunched, holding her books against her chest like a shield, trying to make herself invisible. But at San Rafael, invisibility was a privilege the popular kids refused to grant her.

The ringleader of her torment was Patricia Montalvo, the undisputed queen of the school. Patricia had everything: striking blonde hair, flawless status, and a father who owned a chain of luxury hotels. Her boyfriend, Rodrigo Castillo, was captain of the polo team and heir to a real estate fortune.

Patricia turned Valentina’s high school existence into a systematic nightmare. It wasn't physical violence; it was psychological warfare. Whispered insults just loud enough to hear, snickers during roll call, and fake party invitations sent only to be publicly withdrawn. Valentina endured it silently, keeping her head down and focusing on the one thing no one could take from her: her mind.
