Chapter 2 - The Night She’ll Never ForgetThe cruelty reached its peak during senior year at the annual Spring Gala. Patricia and her circle had convinced Valentina that the school board required all scholarship students to participate in a special presentation onstage to honor their benefactor.

Valentina, naïve and eager to ensure her scholarship remained intact for university applications, spent weeks preparing a speech. Her mother stayed up for nights sewing her a simple pastel blue dress from fabric scraps so Valentina could look presentable.
When Valentina walked onto the lighted stage in front of three hundred wealthy parents, alumni, and students, the spotlight hit her. But instead of the microphone being handed to her, Patricia walked to the center stage holding a microphone connected to the main speakers.
Patricia didn't announce Valentina's academic achievements. Instead, she broadcasted a recorded video on the giant screen—a video secretly filmed through the window of the Ruiz family café. It showed Valentina’s tired father counting copper coins from the tip jar and Valentina sweeping spilled coffee grounds off the floor in a stained apron.
The auditorium erupted into cruel laughter. Patricia smiled sweetly into the microphone and said, "Let’s give a round of applause to our scholarship charity case, who shows us all how hard the servants work so we can enjoy our school!"

Valentina stood frozen under the blinding lights, her mother's handcrafted dress feeling like a heavy shroud. Tears burned her eyes, but she refused to let them fall on that stage. She looked past the laughing crowd and caught the eyes of Mateo Vane, a quiet, observant transfer student whose father owned a modest software firm. Mateo looked at her not with pity or amusement, but with deep anger at the crowd's cruelty.
Valentina ran off the stage, out of the marble doors, and into the rain. That night, kneeling on the wet pavement outside San Rafael, she made a quiet vow: She would never be powerless again.
