Chapter 9 - The ReckoningThe aftermath of Richard’s arrest was swift and final. Charged with felony kidnapping, corporate extortion, and endangerment, he was denied bail and sentenced to twenty-five years in state prison.

A week after the incident, the penthouse was quiet once again.
The one-year contract anniversary was still months away, but the nature of their home had irrevocably changed. There were no more separate wings, no more formal business speak, and no more cold boundaries.
Late one evening, Kevin sat in the living room, packing his old duffel bag with a few personal tools.
Victoria walked out of her bedroom, wearing a simple silk robe. She stopped when she saw the bag on the sofa. Her heart sank into her stomach.
"What are you doing?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper.
Kevin looked up, a sad, complicated expression on his face. "The threat is gone, Victoria. Richard is in prison. Your control of Hayes Global is permanently secured. The board trusts you completely now."
Victoria took a step closer, her hands trembling slightly. "Are you... leaving?"
"Our contract was built on protecting you from Richard and helping Leora," Kevin said softly, standing up. "I don't want you to feel obligated to keep us here out of gratitude. You've given my daughter her life back. I can never repay that."
"Obligation?!" Victoria cried out, tears suddenly welling up in her gray eyes—tears he had never seen her shed before. "You think I keep you here out of obligation, Kevin?!"
Kevin blinked, stunned by her sudden emotional outburst.
Victoria walked up to him, slamming her hands against his chest. "You idiot! I don't care about the contract! I don't care about the board! For thirty-four years, I lived in a frozen castle where everyone wanted something from me. You and Leora brought light, warmth, and love into this dead house!"
She looked up at him, tears spilling down her cheeks. "I don't want a business partner, Kevin. I want you. I love you."
Kevin stared at her, the breath catching in his throat. He dropped the duffel bag to the floor, reached out, and pulled Victoria firmly into his arms.
"I loved you the moment you stood up to Richard at the gala," Kevin whispered against her hair. "I was only leaving because I thought I was just a contract to you."

"You're my husband," Victoria sobbed softly, pressing her face into his chest. "My real husband."
Kevin lifted her jaw gently and kissed her—a deep, passionate kiss that melted away every remaining shadow of the past.
