Chapter 5 - The Snake in the BoardroomFriday morning arrived with an icy rain beating against the high-rise windows of Hayes Global headquarters. The 50th-floor boardroom was packed with forty voting directors, attorneys, and press representatives.

At the head of the long mahogany table sat the trustees of the Hayes Estate.
Richard stood near the podium, holding a thick folder. “Ladies and gentlemen, the bylaws set forth by our founder are clear! Victoria Hayes claims she has fulfilled the marital clause, but I submit to this board that her marriage to Kevin Carter is an orchestrated fraud, a sham designed solely to hijack control of this corporation!”
Murmurs echoed across the room.
“Richard,” Victoria said, standing up calmly from her chair, wearing a tailored white suit that radiated authority. “Your desperation is embarrassing.”
“Is it?” Richard smirked, turning to a large projection screen. “I hired a private investigation firm. I have records showing Mr. Carter’s bank account received a wire transfer of two million dollars from a hidden offshore account associated with your personal legal team just seventy-two hours ago!”
The boardroom erupted in noise. Board members began pointing and shouting.
Richard leaned forward, triumphant. “It was a paid transaction! She bought a fake husband!”
Kevin stood up from his seat near the back of the room. He walked slowly down the center aisle, pulling a leather binder from his suit jacket and placing it directly in front of the chief trustee.
“That wire transfer was not a payment for marriage, Mr. Trustee,” Kevin said, his voice echoing authoritatively through the room. “It was the initial seed capital for the Leora Carter Pediatric Autoimmune Foundation—a charitable trust established jointly by my wife and me, co-signed by Northwestern Memorial Hospital.”
The chief trustee opened the folder, reviewing the legal deeds, medical endorsements, and tax-exempt filings bearing both Victoria and Kevin’s signatures, dated well before the board deadline.
“Furthermore,” Kevin continued, looking directly at Richard, “if you had checked the public records instead of buying illegally hacked bank receipts, you would see that I surrendered all personal access to those funds. Every cent goes directly to funding treatment for critically ill children in Chicago.”
The chief trustee slammed his gavel down. “The documents are legitimate, legally binding, and fully compliant with the founder's trust conditions. Victoria Hayes holds fifty-one percent voting control!”

Applause broke out among the majority board members. Richard stood frozen, his eyes wide with horror as security guards moved in to escort him off the premises for corporate espionage and illegal wiretapping.
Victoria looked across the room at Kevin. He gave her a subtle, reassuring nod. She had won her empire, but as she looked at him, she realized the greatest prize in the room was the man who had just saved her.
