Chapter 3 - Stepping into the Gold CageThe Hayes Penthouse looked vastly different in the daylight, though no less intimidating. Spanning the top two floors of the iconic building on Michigan Avenue, it featured floor-to-ceiling glass, white Italian marble, and minimalist art worth millions.

When the elevator doors opened, Leora gasped, clutching Kevin’s leg. “Daddy, is this a palace?”
“Something like that, sweetie,” Kevin murmured, adjusting his heavy duffel bag over his shoulder.
Victoria emerged from her private office holding a tablet. She looked over at the father and daughter standing in her foyer—Kevin in his worn denim jacket and boots, Leora in a faded pink hoodie. They looked completely out of place in her pristine sanctuary, yet there was an undeniable warmth radiating from them that made her quiet apartment feel strangely empty.
“Your quarters are on the east wing,” Victoria said, gesturing toward a wide hallway. “Leora’s room has been decorated according to the preferences your file indicated.”
Kevin walked down the hall and opened the door to Leora’s room. He froze. The room was bathed in soft sunlight, featuring a custom wooden canopy bed, walls painted a gentle lavender, shelves filled with classic children's books, and a window seat overlooking Lake Michigan.
Leora let out a squeal of joy, dropping her small backpack and running toward the bed. “Daddy! Look! A fairy tale room!”
Kevin turned to Victoria, who was standing in the doorway with her arms crossed. “You did all this in twelve hours?”
“I have staff,” Victoria replied evenly. “And I don’t half-ass things, Mr. Carter. Tomorrow evening is the pre-board dinner at the Drake Hotel. Richard and the entire executive committee will be there. You need to look like a man who swept me off my feet, not a man who delivers my takeout.”
She signaled to a tall tailor who walked in carrying three racks of custom suits. “We have four hours to make you look like a billionaire’s husband.”

For the rest of the afternoon, Kevin endured fittings, styling, and a crash course on Hayes Global history. Yet, amidst the chaos, he noticed small things: how Victoria discreetly instructed her private chef to prepare kid-friendly, organic meals for Leora; how she double-checked the air filtration settings in the east wing to protect Leora’s immune system.
Underneath the armor of the Ice Queen, Kevin caught the first glimpse of a woman who was fiercely protective—and deeply lonely.
