THE PRICE OF DEVOTION / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6 - Cracks in the IceA month passed, and the storm surrounding Hayes Global gradually settled. The tabloids shifted their focus, praising Victoria’s new philanthropic direction and branding Kevin as Chicago's most eligible, devoted husband.

Yet inside the penthouse, the atmosphere had shifted entirely.

The cold marble halls were now filled with the sound of Leora’s laughter, the scent of home-cooked pancakes on Sunday mornings, and quiet late-night conversations in the kitchen.

One evening, after putting Leora to bed, Kevin found Victoria sitting on the balcony, wrapped in a fleece blanket, staring out at the illuminated city skyline. She looked small, vulnerable, stripped of her corporate armor.

"You should be sleeping," Kevin said softly, stepping out onto the cold balcony and handing her a mug of hot tea.

"I don't know how to turn my brain off," Victoria admitted, taking the mug. Her fingers brushed his, sending a warm jolt through both of them. "For ten years, my life was just survival. Fighting Richard, protecting the company, proving to my grandfather's ghost that I was worthy."

"And now?" Kevin asked, leaning against the railing beside her.

"Now... the noise has stopped," Victoria whispered, looking up at him. "And I realize I don't know who I am when I'm not fighting."

"You're a woman who saved my daughter's life," Kevin said gently, his tone deep and sincere. "You're a woman who built a foundation for sick kids. You're strong, Victoria. But you don't have to carry the world by yourself anymore."

Victoria stared at him, her lips parting slightly. For the first time, she saw no pretense, no transaction, and no cold calculation in his eyes—only genuine, warmth and affection.

Slowly, almost hesitantly, Victoria reached out and laid her hand over his on the railing. Kevin didn't pull away. He folded his fingers over hers, holding her hand firmly against the winter night cold.
