Chapter 4 - Shadows at the GalaThe grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a sea of tuxedos, diamond necklaces, and flashing camera bulbs. Chicago's elite had gathered for the annual Hayes Global Philanthropy Gala, but everyone in the room knew the real spectacle: Victoria Hayes was introducing her secret husband.

Kevin adjusted the cuff links of his bespoke Tom Ford tuxedo. He looked striking—broad-shouldered, tall, with his dark hair styled back and his jaw cleanly shaved. Standing beside him, Victoria wore a sweeping navy velvet gown that accentuated her graceful silhouette, her arm laced tightly through his.
“Smile, darling,” Victoria murmured under her breath, her smile dazzling for the nearby photographers. “Richard is approaching at two o’clock.”
A man in his late thirties with slicked-back hair and a sharp, cynical sneer walked toward them, holding a glass of scotch. Richard Hayes looked Kevin up and down with obvious disdain.
“Victoria,” Richard drawled, his voice dripping with condescension. “The entire board is buzzing. We all thought you were married to your desk. And who is this fine gentleman?”
“Kevin Carter,” Kevin said, extending his hand with a firm, unyielding grip that forced Richard to tighten his own. “It’s a pleasure, Richard. Victoria talks about you... occasionally.”
Richard narrowed his eyes, pulling his hand back. “Carter? The former architect from Whitmore & Vance? The one who spent the last two years delivering food to pay off hospital bills?”
The surrounding guests gasped softly. Victoria’s body tensed beside Kevin, her fingers digging into his arm.
Before Victoria could speak, Kevin leaned in closer to Richard, his expression calm, grounded, and terrifyingly confident. “That’s right, Richard. When my late wife was sick, I gave up everything to stand by her side until her last breath. I know what real loyalty looks like. Some men hide behind boardrooms and daddy's trust funds; others build a life with their own hands. Victoria recognized a real man when she saw one. Can you say the same?”
Whispers rippled through the gathered board members. Several elderly directors nodded in quiet approval at Kevin's grounded, honorable response.
Richard’s face flushed red with anger. “We’ll see how brave you are at the board meeting on Friday morning, Carter. A cheap marriage certificate won't hide a gold-digger.”
As Richard stormed off, Victoria turned to Kevin, her gray eyes wide with genuine shock. “That was... unexpected.”

“I told you,” Kevin whispered, stepping closer and gently tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear for the benefit of the watching cameras. “I don't let people disrespect my family.”
Victoria’s breath caught in her throat. For a brief second, as his hand brushed her neck, the Ice Queen melted completely.
