Chapter 9 - The Handcuff VerdictSix months later, the criminal trial of United States v. Daniel Miller concluded at the federal courthouse downtown.

The jury took less than thirty minutes to return a verdict: GUILTY ON ALL COUNTS.

On the morning of sentencing, I sat in the front row of the gallery wearing an elegant cream silk dress, flanked by Victoria and Marcus.

Daniel stood before the judge in an orange prison jumpsuit, his hands chained at his waist, his face hollow, gaunt, and completely broken.

Judge Margaret Thomas delivered a scathing speech before pronouncing sentence.

“Daniel Miller,” the judge declared, her voice echoing through the silent courtroom. “You acted with arrogant entitlement, betraying your spouse, stealing from your employer, and attempting to frame an innocent woman to cover your greed. Your actions demonstrate a complete lack of moral integrity.”

She slammed her gavel down with an echoing thud.

“I sentence you to twelve years in federal prison, with full financial restitution ordered to the Claire Vance Trust.”

As the marshals led Daniel away through the side door in heavy chains, he turned his head, looking at me with wild, tear-filled eyes.

“Claire! Please!” Daniel cried out as the door began to close. “I’m sorry! Please give me a second chance!”

I didn't say a word. I simply stood up, adjusted my coat, turned my back, and walked out into the warm afternoon sunlight.
