Chapter 5 - The Corporate ConfrontationAt 8:45 a.m. the following morning, the top-floor boardroom of Miller & Vance Architecture downtown was filled with senior partners, major shareholders, and corporate investors.

Daniel sat near the head of the conference table, wearing a suit he had borrowed from a friend, trying his absolute best to look composed, professional, and confident despite having slept on a couch in a cheap motel.

His phone was buzzing continuously on the mahogany table with texts from Vanessa, who was currently being served with divorce papers by her husband Mark.

Daniel ignored the phone, smoothing his tie as the Senior Managing Partner, Arthur Vance, cleared his throat.

“Welcome, gentlemen,” Arthur Vance announced. “Today we consider Daniel Miller’s application for Senior Partner status based on his record of operational efficiency—”

The boardroom door opened with a firm, deliberate push.

I walked into the room wearing a sharp charcoal suit, my hair pulled back in a neat bun, holding a secure leather briefcase.

The room fell into an awkward silence.

Daniel jumped up from his chair, his face turning pale. “Claire?! What are you doing here? This is an internal board meeting!”

“I know what it is, Daniel,” I said calmly, walking straight to the head of the table and placing my briefcase down. “I’m here in my official capacity as the Chief Forensic Auditor retained by Vance Financial Holdings.”

Arthur Vance looked up, his eyebrows raising in surprise and deep respect. “Claire? You’re conducting the internal compliance audit for our firm?”

“I completed the audit at three o'clock this morning, Mr. Vance,” I replied, pulling an encrypted flash drive from my blazer pocket and handed it to the media director. “And I suggest everyone look at screen one.”
