Chapter 3 - The Neighborhood AlarmBy eight o'clock that evening, the scene in front of my house had attracted half the neighborhood.

While the police officers verified my ownership documents and instructed a shivering, humiliated Daniel and Vanessa to leave the property, my attorney, Victoria Vance, arrived in her black sedan.
Victoria handed a sealed manila folder to the lead officer.
âOfficer,â Victoria stated calmly, âthis is an emergency trespassing notice and a temporary restraining order issued against Mr. Daniel Miller. All his personal effects have been placed in bags on the curb.â
Vanessaâs husband, Markâa local real estate developerâpulled his truck up to the curb, stepping out with a look of utter bewilderment. He had seen the neighborhood app alert while driving home from the airport.
âVanessa?â Mark called out, staring at his wife standing on my lawn wrapped in a towel next to Daniel. âWhat the hell is going on here? Why are you at Claireâs house?â
Vanessa froze, her eyes wide with terror as she looked from Mark to Daniel, completely unable to form a coherent sentence.
I stepped down off the porch, holding my tablet.
âMark,â I said gently. âI think you should check your home security footage from every Tuesday at five o'clock for the past six months.â
Markâs face hardened into stone. He looked at Daniel, then at his wife, and turned around without saying another word, climbing back into his truck and slamming the door shut.
Daniel stood on the wet pavement in his swim trunks, holding two contractor bags containing his crumpled suits, watching as his entire comfortable life dissolved into public humiliation.

âWhere am I supposed to go?!â Daniel yelled at me as an officer led him toward the sidewalk. âAll my credit cards are linked to our joint account!â
âThe joint account was closed at 5:45 p.m., Daniel,â I replied, stepping back inside my home and shutting the heavy oak door with a quiet, final click.
