Chapter 2 - The Deed in the VaultThe piercing shriek of the security alarm shattered the quiet evening air of Maple Crest Estates.

Daniel burst through the front door wearing only wet swim trunks, clutching a towel around his shoulders. Vanessa darted out right behind him, trying to hide her face behind her wet hair as three neighboring cars pulled into their driveways, headlights sweeping across the front yard.
âClaire! Are you insane?!â Daniel screamed over the blaring siren, trying to grab the contractor bags littered across the lawn. âTurn this off!â
Our next-door neighbor, Mrs. Higgins, stepped out onto her porch holding a flashlight and her phone. âClaire, dear! Is everything okay? The security alert popped up on my phone!â
I stood on the front porch steps, wearing my crisp white linen blazer, looking completely calm and composed under the bright driveway floodlights.
âEverything is fine, Mrs. Higgins!â I called out loudly over the siren. âJust removing trash from my property! The police are on their way!â
Vanessa let out a strangled gasp, dropping to her knees on the grass as she tried to stuff her scattered clothes back into her designer tote bag while neighbors looked on from their windows.
Daniel charged up the porch steps toward me, his face red with rage. âKey in the code, Claire! Now!â
I held up my phone, unlocking the screen to show him the county land registry portal.
âRead the screen, Daniel,â I said softly.
He blinked, staring at the digital document.
[PARCEL 402-A: SOLE OWNER â CLAIRE VANCE FAMILY TRUST. SECONDARY GUARANTORS: NONE.]
âWhat... what is this?â Daniel stammered, his voice suddenly losing all its aggressive volume. âI signed the refinancing papers!â
âYou signed an equity agreement for a loan I took against my separate investment account,â I explained, my voice dropping into a deadly whisper. âYou don't own a single brick of this house. You never did.â
Two police cruisers pulled onto the cul-de-sac, their red and blue lights flashing against the oak trees.

Danielâs face drained of every drop of color. âClaire... please... don't do this...â
âYou told me marriage shouldn't feel like an audit, Daniel,â I whispered into his ear as two officers stepped out of their vehicles. âUnfortunately for you, my audit just began.â
