Chapter 9 - A Partnership of Truth

In the spring of the following year, Ethan visited the Hudson Valley cottage on a radiant Sunday afternoon.

He wore a casual navy sweater and dark jeans, carrying a basket of fresh pastries from our favorite bakery in the city. My mother greeted him with warm, maternal affection, pouring fresh lemonade on the porch before leaving us to walk along the blooming apple orchard.

"The Carter Foundation is launching a new national advocacy division next month, Ava," Ethan said as we walked beneath the white blossoms. "We are establishing twenty safe houses and a specialized legal-defense fund for survivors of domestic coercion and corporate abuse."

He stopped beside an ancient apple tree, turning to face me.

"The board unanimously voted to offer the Executive Directorship of the division to the most capable, courageous woman we know."

I looked at him, my heart swelling with emotion. "Ethan... are you offering me a job?"

"I’m offering you a platform to change thousands of lives, Ava," Ethan smiled warmly. "And if you'll let me... I’m asking for the chance to stand beside you as a partner, not as a boss."

He reached out, his hand gently catching mine. There was no pressure, no demand, and no hidden strings—only the profound, patient love of a man who had waited for me to heal.

"I would love that, Ethan," I whispered, stepping into his embrace.

When his arms wrapped around me, warm and strong, I didn't flinch. I buried my face against his chest, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of his heart, knowing that I was finally home.
