Chapter 4 - The Gala Stage

At 8:15 PM, the ballroom lights dimmed, and a spotlight illuminated the main stage.

The master of ceremonies stepped to the podium. "Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Carter Enterprises, Mr. Ethan Carter."

Thunderous applause filled the room as Ethan walked onto the stage. He looked commanding, composed, and effortlessly powerful. He adjusted the microphone and looked out over the sea of four hundred wealthy donors.

"Thank you, everyone," Ethan began, his voice warm and resonant through the sound system. "Tonight is about honoring true dedication to saving lives. The Carter Foundation has always believed that those who wield medical power must do so with uncompromised integrity, selflessness, and profound respect for human dignity."

Andrew smiled proudly at our front-row table, adjusting his bow tie and leaning back in his chair, basking in the perceived praise.

"Every year," Ethan continued, his tone shifting into a colder, sharper cadence, "we bestow the Humanitarian Medal of Honor upon an individual who represents the pinnacle of medical excellence. Tonight, Dr. Andrew Vaughn believes he is here to accept that medal for his work in pediatric cardiology."

Andrew stood up halfway, preparing to walk toward the stage steps with a rehearsed, humble wave.

"However," Ethan’s voice cut through the applause like a steel blade, "true integrity cannot hide behind hospital walls. And true heroism does not operate behind closed doors in the dark."

The room abruptly went dead silent. Andrew froze on the stairs, his smile faltering.

Ethan looked directly at the production booth at the back of the ballroom.

"Roll the presentation," Ethan commanded.
