Chapter 7 - The Sanctuary

Within two hours, the media storm had exploded across every national news network.
Headlines from the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and CNN dominated the broadcasts:
"CELEBRATED CARDIAC SURGEON ARRESTED AT CARTER GALA FOR FRAUD AND AGGRAVATED ASSAULT." "ETHAN CARTER EXPOSES MULTI-MILLION-DOLLAR HOSPITAL CORRUPTION ON LIVE STAGE."
While the press staked out the precinct and the hospital, a private black town car escorted me through the underground security gates of Ethan’s private penthouse in Tribeca.
The penthouse was a serene, sunlit sanctuary of warm cedar, soft linen, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Hudson River.
Dr. Robert Langford and a compassionate female nurse were already waiting in the guest wing. They carefully examined my injuries, applied soothing medical compresses, and provided specialized pain management.
"Your mother is resting comfortably in the private cardiac wing at Mount Sinai, Ava," Dr. Langford reassured me with a gentle smile. "Her vital signs are stable, her specialist care is fully guaranteed under the Carter Trust, and Dr. Vaughn's name has been permanently struck from her medical chart."
Tears of pure, overwhelming relief spilled over my cheeks.
At 11:30 PM, the front door clicked open, and Ethan walked in.
He had removed his tuxedo jacket and tie, looking exhausted yet profoundly grounded. He walked into the living room, setting two cups of hot chamomile tea on the low oak coffee table before sitting on the sofa across from me.
"Is he in holding?" I asked softly.
"Bail was denied thirty minutes ago," Ethan said, looking at me with deep tenderness. "The District Attorney has frozen all of his accounts. He will never practice medicine, and he will never come within a thousand miles of you or your mother again."
I looked down at my hands, feeling the weight of the last eleven months finally lifting from my shoulders.
"Why did you do all of this, Ethan?" I asked, my voice trembling. "You risked your foundation's biggest night. You risked a multi-million-dollar charity initiative."

Ethan leaned forward, his amber eyes shining with raw, honest emotion.
"Because the foundation doesn't mean a damn thing if I can't protect the woman I love," Ethan said softly.
