Chapter 2 - The Pedestal of Dr. Vaughn

Ethan’s face went deadly still. The warmth in his eyes hardened into a chilling, predatory focus that I had seen only when rival hedge funds attempted hostile takeovers of Carter Enterprises.

"Andrew Vaughn," Ethan said, the name tasting like poison on his tongue.

"He controls everything, Ethan," I whispered, wrapping my arms around myself. "If I try to leave, if I speak a word to the police, he swore he would destroy my mother's specialized medical care at Presbyterian Hospital. He signed her hospice and cardiac care waivers under his personal supervision. He told me that one phone call from him would have her private room revoked and her experimental medications discontinued."

The cruelty was so monstrous, so calculated, that Ethan’s hands clenched into fists at his sides, the veins along his forearms bulging against his tailored cuffs.

"How long has this been happening, Ava?"

"Since the second month of our engagement," I admitted, my voice breaking. "It started with broken dishes. Then shoving against walls when his hospital surgeries had complications. Last night... he found out I was staying late at the office to finish your foundation balance sheets. He accused me of being unfaithful, threw me against the bathroom marble vanity, and pinned me to the floor."

A single tear tracked through the bruise on my cheek.

"He told me that tonight, I will stand beside him under the stage lights and smile for every journalist in the country, or he will ensure my mother is discharged to a state nursing home by tomorrow morning."

Ethan closed the dressing room door quietly, stepping into the center of the suite. He reached out, his warm, steady hand resting gently on my shoulder, careful not to touch any tender bruised skin.

"Listen to me very carefully, Ava," Ethan said, his voice dropping into an authoritative, low baritone that commanded absolute certainty. "Your mother is being transferred to a private medical suite at Mount Sinai under the personal care of Dr. Robert Langford—the chief of cardiology—within the next forty minutes. My private medical transport team is already mobilized."

My eyes widened in disbelief. "Ethan, you can't—"

"I can," Ethan interrupted firmly. "And as for Dr. Andrew Vaughn... he thinks tonight is the crowning achievement of his career. I am going to give him the grandest stage in Manhattan—and then I am going to pull the floor completely out from beneath his feet."
