Chapter 8 - Whispers in the Corridors

Victoria Sterling’s explosive exit from the forty-sixth floor left shockwaves echoing through the corporate gossip mills of Meridian Tower. By Friday morning, every mid-level manager, accountant, and marketing executive was whispering behind closed doors about the mysterious former cleaning woman who had apparently bewitched the billionaire CEO to the point of publicly humiliating high-society royalty. Bailey felt the weight of a thousand judging eyes as she walked down the corridors, but her newly found resilience kept her spine straight. She focused entirely on her work, pouring her energy into her worker-wellness program, which rolled out successful health-benefit expansions for night staff, custodial teams, and building maintenance workers across the city. Late that afternoon, Howard Mills, the night security guard who had helped her save Lucas’s life, stopped by her office carrying a small box of donuts. “Just wanted to check in on our star executive,” Howard grinned, setting the box on her desk. “Word around the ground floor is you made the ice queen herself pack up and run crying to her town car.” Bailey laughed, offering him a cup of coffee. “I didn't do anything, Howard. Lucas handled it. But I won't lie, it feels nice not to be invisible anymore.” “You were never invisible to those of us who mattered, Bailey,” Howard said warmly. “And the boys downstairs are talking about your wellness initiative like you’re a superhero. You’re changing lives here.” After Howard left, Bailey sat back down to review a final set of operational audit reports. As she opened the digital ledger, an encrypted error flag popped up on her screen—an unauthorized data query originating from an internal financial terminal, attempting to access her foundation’s restricted employee welfare fund. Frowning, Bailey traced the internal IP address. The query wasn't random; it was targeted, executing a script designed to siphon micro-transactions from the worker-wellness budget into an unlisted offshore routing account. And the digital signature attached to the access request belonged to none other than Marcus Vance—the suspended vice president of operations, who was apparently still pulling strings through corporate sympathizers before his formal termination hearing. Bailey’s nursing instincts flared instantly. Someone was trying to sabotage her department from the inside, and she needed to take the evidence directly to the top.
