Chapter 6 - Shadows of the Past

Stepping out of the elevator onto the forty-sixth floor the following Monday morning felt like walking into an entirely different universe. Gone were the gray rubber gloves and cleaning carts; in their place was a tailored navy blazer and white blouse that fit her cleanly, courtesy of a hasty weekend shopping trip funded by her new signing bonus. Her new office was spacious, sunlit, and smelled faintly of fresh eucalyptus. Yet, as Bailey sat behind her sleek glass desk staring at her brand-new corporate laptop, an old, familiar phantom crept into her mind: imposter syndrome. Throughout her first week, whispers traveled through the executive corridors. To the high-level managers accustomed to Ivy League degrees and aggressive corporate climbers, Bailey’s sudden ascension from night cleaner to Director of Foundation Outreach looked suspiciously like executive favoritism. Some whispered behind water coolers; others gave her polite, icy smiles in the hallways. Bailey tried to let the gossip roll off her back, but the weight of proving herself was immense. Late on Thursday evening, while reviewing audit reports for building safety standards, a sharp knock sounded at her open office door. Lucas stood leaning against the frame, holding two takeout cups of artisan coffee from the cafe downstairs. “Burning the midnight oil, Director Carter?” he teased gently, walking in and placing a cup on her desk. Bailey smiled, rubbing her tired eyes. “Just making sure my budget spreadsheets match reality. Corporate finance has a lot more moving parts than scrub buckets.” “You’re doing an incredible job, Bailey,” Lucas said, pulling up a chair opposite her desk. “The foundation board approved your worker-wellness initiative unanimously this afternoon. You’ve accomplished more in two weeks than my previous director did in six months.” “Only because you cleared the runway for me,” she admitted honestly. “And because you believed in me when I didn't even believe in myself.” Lucas looked at her across the desk, the air between them shifting from professional warmth into something much softer and more electric. Before either of them could speak, the private office phone on Bailey’s desk rang shrilly, shattering the quiet intimacy of the moment. Bailey cleared her throat and clicked the speaker button. “Director Carter speaking.” A cold, sharp female voice echoed through the speaker. “Bailey Carter? This is Victoria Sterling. Lucas’s former fiancée. I’m currently downstairs in the lobby security checkpoint, and your guards are giving me a ridiculous amount of trouble about a visitor pass. Fix this immediately.” Lucas’s jaw tightened instantly, a dark shadow crossing his handsome features. Bailey looked up at him, sensing the sudden, heavy emotional storm about to break.
