Chapter 12 - Facing the Truth

The following evening, after Thomas Sterling was safely discharged from the hospital with a clean bill of health and a renewed lease on life, Lucas invited Bailey up to his private penthouse for a quiet, intimate dinner away from the public eye. Over a simple meal of homemade pasta and wine, Bailey sat looking out at the glittering skyline of Chicago, reflecting on the whirlwind journey that had brought her from scrubbing floors to saving lives in boardrooms and ballrooms. “Thomas Sterling told the board today that he owes his life to you twice over—once for surviving your rescue of me, and once for saving him directly,” Lucas smiled, refilling her wine glass. Bailey smiled softly, swirling the red wine in her glass. “I didn't do anything special, Lucas. It’s just nursing. It never really leaves your blood, no matter how many spreadsheets you look at.” Lucas set his fork down, his expression turning serious and tender. “Bailey... earlier today, while you were handling the emergency downstairs, I had my legal team pull your academic transcripts from your old nursing school.” Bailey stiffened, a sudden wave of defensive vulnerability washing over her. “Lucas, why would you do that?” “Because I wanted to know how close you were to finishing your degree before your mother got sick,” he answered softly. Bailey looked down at her hands, a lump forming in her throat. “I was two semesters away from my clinical rotations. I had straight A’s. I was so close... but the bills swallowed everything.” Lucas reached across the table, covering her trembling hands with his warm palms. “You paused your dream to save your mother, Bailey. That was the most noble thing a human being could do. But a debt like that shouldn't cost you your entire future.” He slid a small, cream-colored envelope across the table. Bailey picked it up with shaking fingers and opened the flap. Inside was not a corporate contract, but a formal, fully endowed academic enrollment package at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing—complete with a complete tuition waiver, a housing stipend, and a flexible executive schedule designed so she could complete her clinicals while continuing to direct the Bennett Meridian Foundation. Across the bottom of the page, written in clean ink, was a note: Established in perpetual honor of Evelyn Carter. Your healing hands belong to the world, Bailey. Tears streamed freely down Bailey’s face, overwhelming her with a profound, shattering wave of joy and closure. She looked across the table at the man who had looked past her work uniform, loved her through her brokenness, and rebuilt her shattered dreams. “I don't even know how to thank you,” she choked out through her tears. Lucas stood up from his chair, walked around the table, and gently pulled her up into his arms, holding her tighter than he had ever held anyone in his life. “You don't have to thank me, Bailey. Just let me love you.”
