Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Confrontation

The following morning, Bailey walked into the ground-floor cafeteria of Meridian Tower, still reeling from her encounter with Lucas Bennett. She grabbed a simple paper cup of black coffee, hoping to slip unnoticed to her locker before the day shift arrived. But corporate corridors are notoriously leaky, and word had already spread that the billionaire CEO had personally sought out a night cleaner. As Bailey crossed the marble lobby, a sharp, arrogant voice cut through the ambient chatter. “You there—cleaner!” Bailey stopped, turning to see Marcus Vance, senior vice president of operations, striding toward her with a scowl carved into his face. Marcus was known across the tower as a ruthless climber who treated subordinate staff like dirt. “Yes, sir?” Bailey asked quietly, keeping her head lowered. Marcus stopped inches away, invading her personal space. “I hear you’ve been wandering around executive floors during unauthorized hours, cornering senior leadership with sob stories about your background. Let me make something crystal clear to you, Miss Carter. This is a multi-billion-dollar enterprise, not a charity shelter. If I catch you trying to manipulate the CEO’s gratitude for personal leverage again, you’ll be out on the street before you can blink.” Bailey’s cheeks burned with unmerited humiliation. She gripped her coffee cup tightly, biting her tongue to keep from crying. Years of hardship had taught her to swallow insults, but hearing her life reduced to a ‘sob story’ struck a raw nerve. “I didn't ask for anything, Mr. Vance,” she managed to whisper. “I was just doing my job.” “Your job is to empty wastebaskets, not act like you belong in this boardroom,” Marcus sneered, raising his voice so surrounding employees could witness his petty dominance. “Consider this a verbal warning. One more misstep and—” “Is there a problem here, Marcus?” A cold, razor-sharp voice interrupted from behind. Marcus froze, the smug expression instantly vanishing from his face as he spun around. Walking down the center of the lobby was Lucas Bennett, flanked by two senior legal advisors. The ambient noise of the lobby died instantly. Every employee turned to watch. Marcus stammered, turning pale. “L-Lucas! I didn't see you there. I was just... just maintaining operational discipline with the cleaning staff—” “Operational discipline?” Lucas repeated, his voice dropping into a chilling register that made Marcus flinch. He walked slowly until he stood directly beside Bailey, placing a protective, authoritative hand on the small of her back. “Are you instructing my employees on how to behave, Marcus?” “She... she was loitering in executive areas—” “She was invited into my executive areas,” Lucas cut him off smoothly, his slate-grey eyes locking onto Marcus with lethal intensity. “In fact, Bailey Carter holds more integrity in her smallest finger than you have displayed in your entire corporate career.” Marcus swallowed hard, sweat beading on his forehead. “I didn't realize—” “Clearly,” Lucas said sharply. “Effective immediately, you are suspended pending an internal ethics review of your conduct toward subordinate personnel. Hand your security badge to human resources on your way out.” The lobby fell into absolute, stunned silence. Marcus opened his mouth to protest, but the deadly coldness in Lucas’s eyes shut him down completely. He turned on his heel and hurried toward the exit in total disgrace. Lucas turned his attention to Bailey, his expression instantly softening as he looked down at her. “Are you alright, Bailey?” She nodded slowly, her heart pounding with a mixture of shock and profound gratitude. “Yes, Mr. Bennett. Thank you.” “Come with me,” Lucas said gently, offering his arm. “It’s time we discuss your new office upstairs.”
