Chapter 14 - Breaking the Ice

Later that evening, after the gala program concluded and the ballroom crowd drifted out onto the moonlit outdoor terrace to watch fireworks burst over Lake Michigan, Lucas slipped away from the bustling reception, leading Bailey by the hand up a private exterior staircase toward the quiet, glass-enclosed observation deck atop the pier tower. The night air was freezing, carrying the crisp scent of winter snow across the water, but Bailey felt completely warm wrapped inside Lucas’s heavy wool overcoat, which he had draped over her shoulders before they stepped outside. High above the glittering lights of Chicago, the city stretched out before them like an endless ocean of stars. Lucas walked over to the edge of the glass railing, turning to face Bailey with an expression of intense, quiet vulnerability. “You know,” Lucas murmured, a soft smile touching his lips, “when I first met you in that hospital bed review, I told myself that rescuing you from cleaning carts was just a matter of settling a debt.” Bailey raised an eyebrow playfully, leaning against the glass. “Oh? And what is it now?” “Now?” Lucas stepped closer, taking her hands in his. His slate-grey eyes were pools of absolute devotion. “Now, I realize that saving me in that elevator was the universe’s way of fixing my broken heart. I spent years building an empire out of glass and steel, but my life was entirely empty until you walked into it with your healing hands and your fierce, beautiful soul.” Bailey’s heart hammered against her ribs, completely captivated by his words. “I was just a cleaning woman, Lucas. Scared, broken, and drowning in debt.” “You were never ‘just’ anything, Bailey,” Lucas corrected fiercely, his fingers tightening around hers. “You were a nurse who paused her calling to love her mother. You were a survivor who refused to break under pressure. And you are the only woman I will ever love for the rest of my days.” He reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a small, dark velvet box. He didn't drop to one knee on the frozen concrete; instead, he stepped directly into her space, opened the velvet lid, and revealed a breathtaking ring featuring a brilliant solitaire diamond flanked by two delicate sapphires—mirroring the colors of the night they first met. “Will you marry me, Bailey?” he asked, his voice thick with emotion. “Will you let me spend the rest of my life making sure you never have to carry the weight of the world alone again?” Tears of pure, unadulterated joy spilled over Bailey’s eyelashes. She threw her arms around his neck, burying her face against his shoulder. “Yes, Lucas,” she sobbed happily. “Yes, a million times yes.” When Lucas kissed her beneath the glittering Chicago stars, with fireworks exploding brilliantly over the dark water below, every trial, every hardship, and every tear of the past melted away into the dawn of their forever.
