Chapter 10 - Unmasking the Vipers

The fallout from the boardroom exposure was swift, merciless, and absolute. Within twenty minutes of Bailey presenting the digital audit logs, corporate security escorted Arthur Sterling’s hand-picked compliance auditors off the premises, while federal regulatory investigators were quietly notified regarding the attempted financial wire fraud tied to Marcus Vance’s active suspension profile. Arthur Sterling attempted to stammer out a hasty defense about administrative misunderstandings, but Lucas cut him off with a single, devastating sentence: “Your resignation will be on my desk by noon, Arthur, or I will hand these cybersecurity logs directly to the federal prosecutor’s office.” Sterling packed his briefcase in trembling disgrace and walked out of the boardroom before the hour was through. After the meeting adjourned and the executive floor emptied out, Bailey stood alone in her office, packing up a few personal files into a cardboard box, assuming that corporate politics would still demand a sacrificial lamb, even when she was innocent. The door opened softly, and Lucas walked in, closing it behind him. He looked at the cardboard box, his brow furrowing. “What are you doing, Bailey?” he asked gently. She looked up, offering a tired smile. “Packing my things, Lucas. You don't need the PR nightmare of keeping a former cleaning woman on your executive board after a proxy war with your senior board members.” Lucas walked straight across the room, gently taking the box out of her hands and setting it aside on the desk. He stepped close, cupping her face with both warm hands. “Listen to me, Bailey Carter,” he said, his voice thick with emotion. “You just exposed corporate corruption, defended your department with surgical precision, and proved you are ten times the executive those old boys’ club dinosaurs will ever be. You aren't going anywhere.” Bailey gazed up into his slate-grey eyes, feeling the protective warmth radiating from him. “You trust me that much?” “I trusted you with my life in an elevator when I couldn't breathe,” Lucas whispered softly, his thumb brushing her cheekbone. “Trusting you with my company is the easiest decision I’ve ever made.” Before she could answer, Lucas leaned down and gently pressed his lips against hers. The kiss started with a soft, hesitant reverence, then blossomed into a deep, passionate confirmation of everything they had survived together. When they finally broke apart, both of them were smiling, the shadows of the past completely banished by the bright horizon of their shared future.
