Chapter 1 - THE INSTAGRAM CAPTION AND THE BROKEN BOUNDARY

“Finally, peace without the drama.” That was the caption under the photograph of my family drinking wine at my Malibu beach house—the beach house they had entered without permission while I was sitting in a glass conference room above downtown Seattle leading an acquisition presentation. My mother had her dirty sandals planted on my white linen sofa, Dad stood at my grill wearing a RELAX MODE hat, and Jessica wore my monogrammed ivory silk robe. They hadn't just stopped for lunch; they had moved in, using an emergency security code I had given my mother four years earlier that she kept like a stolen key.
When I saw her reply to a neighbor claiming I was a generous daughter who lent them the place whenever they wanted, something clean and permanent snapped inside me. Three months earlier, I had explicitly told them the house was off-limits, needing one place where they couldn't reach into my life and rearrange it. Instead of arguing, they waited until I was out of state and turned my boundary into an invitation. I excused myself from the presentation, walked into the elevator, pressed both hands against the brass rail, and calmly instructed my property manager to change every code, update the network passwords, and arm the system in away mode at midnight.
