Chapter 9 - LEARNING TO TRUST THE WOLF

Over the next two weeks, the safe house became an unexpected sanctuary. Dante proved to be a meticulous, fiercely dedicated father, changing diapers at 3:00 AM with the same precision he used to run criminal enterprises. Ella continued monitoring his wound, changing his dressings and ensuring his recovery stayed on track. Slowly, the walls around Dante’s cold exterior began to fracture. He asked about her nursing dreams, her mother’s medical bills, and her life before the diner. In return, Ella saw past the mafia boss persona to find a man trapped by betrayal and fiercely protective of his children.

Domestic life in the wilderness possessed a surreal rhythm. By day, Dante trained on secure satellite terminals, coordinating his loyal captains in Boston while keeping his movements strictly hidden from Sal Romano. By night, he sat by the hearth with Ella, feeding the twins and discussing everything from advanced pharmacology to Italian literature—revealing an intellect and depth that completely dismantled her preconceived notions of syndicate bosses.

One evening, while changing Dante's bandages, Ella gently touched the angry scar tissue forming over his ribs. “How many times have you been shot, Dante?” she asked quietly.

He looked down at her fingers resting against his chest, his expression softening. “Three times before this. In my world, violence is a currency you spend just to stay alive. But this is the first time I’ve ever had something worth protecting with my last breath.”

Ella looked up, their eyes locking in the warm firelight, feeling the invisible magnetic pull between them grow too strong to ignore.
