Chapter 2 - THE PANTRY REFUGE

Knowing headlights outside meant danger, Ella did not hesitate. She wedged herself under the wounded man’s arm and dragged his dead weight down the corridor, through the kitchen, and into the dry-storage pantry—a narrow, windowless room stacked with flour sacks and cleaning supplies. She shoved him behind the shelving, grabbed the bleach bucket, and frantically scrubbed the blood trail off the linoleum just as an SUV stopped in the alley and boots rattled the back doorknob. After the vehicle finally peeled away, Ella returned to the pantry with an industrial first-aid kit, finding that the stranger had managed to unclip the baby carrier and settle the twins—one boy, one girl—in his lap. Pale as marble, his massive blood-covered hand moved with astonishing gentleness to steady the bottle bag as his son made a tiny whimpering sound.

The adrenaline coursing through Ella’s veins felt like liquid fire. Her hands shook so violently she could barely wring out the bleach rag, but she forced her movements to stay fast and precise. Outside, the heavy tread of combat boots against the metal door made her heart hammer against her ribs like a trapped bird. If those men stepped inside, they would find the blood trail she had missed, or worse, they would hear the soft breathing of the infants. She held her own breath, pressing her back against the kitchen counter until the sound of the SUV engine faded into the rainy night.

When she finally slipped into the pantry, the contrast was staggering. The formidable, bleeding criminal was currently transforming into an image of raw, protective fatherhood. The twins were awake now; the little boy was whimpering softly, while his sister stared up at her father with identical piercing eyes. The man—Dante Moretti, though she didn't know his name yet—held them with a tenderness that defied his brutal appearance. His face was carved from stone, pale from massive blood loss, yet his broad fingers adjusted a baby bottle with absolute, practiced care. He looked up at Ella, the harsh light catching the sharp angles of his jaw, and whispered a second plea that sealed her fate: “They’ll kill them too. Help us.”
