Chapter 8 - THE SAFE HOUSE IN THE WOODS

Paulie drove them north across the Massachusetts border into the dense, pine-studded wilderness of the Berkshires, stopping at an isolated, stone-and-timber safe house hidden deep off the main highway. The estate was heavily fortified with modern security cameras, reinforced steel shutters, and a perimeter alarm system. Inside, the cabin was warm, stocked with provisions, and filled with old books and a massive stone fireplace. For the first time in weeks, Dante gently laid the twins in a pair of makeshift cribs while Ella sank into a plush leather armchair, the magnitude of her new reality finally crashing down.
The safe house was a fortress disguised as a rustic mountain retreat. Surrounded by towering pines and granite outcrops, it offered complete isolation from the violent chaos of Boston. As Paulie unloaded the supplies and departed back toward the city, the heavy oak door clicked shut, sealing them off from the rest of the world.
The quiet inside the cabin was profound. Ella walked over to the massive stone fireplace, where a cheerful fire was already crackling, casting long, dancing shadows across the timber walls. She looked down at Leo and Sofia, who were sleeping peacefully side by side in a cushioned bassinet Dante had quickly improvised.

Dante walked up behind her, moving carefully to avoid straining his stitches. He handed her a steaming mug of tea, his hand brushing hers briefly. “Thank you, Ella,” he said softly, the rough edges of his voice smoothing out. “For everything. You saved my children. You saved me.”
Ella took the mug, feeling the warmth spread through her cold fingers as she realized that the most dangerous man in Boston was looking at her like she was his entire world.
