Chapter 4 - THE SECRETS OF SOUTH BOSTON

By dawn, Dante's bleeding had stopped, stabilized by Ella's precise stitches and sheer medical grit. The diner was still locked tight, and the morning sun was beginning to filter through the greasy front windows. Dante watched Ella feed formula to the twin babies—Leo and Sofia—noticing the exhaustion etched deep into her young face. When she confronted him about the dangerous world he dragged into her kitchen, Dante explained that his wife had died under suspicious circumstances and his inner circle had orchestrated an assassination attempt to steal control of his shipping ports. He looked at her with his piercing icy eyes and realized that this ordinary waitress had more courage than an army of capos. He promised that once he secured a safe house, she would be handsomely rewarded and protected from any fallout.
The pale morning light revealed the true extent of the chaos. Empty formula bottles, blood-stained rags, and medical packaging littered the pantry floor. Ella sat on an overturned crate, gently burping little Sofia against her shoulder, feeling a profound sense of detachment from her old life. Just twenty-four hours ago, her biggest worry was how to stall the hospital collection agencies hounding her over her mother’s unpaid bills. Now, she was hiding Boston’s most feared mafia boss and his infant heirs in the back of a greasy diner.
Dante sat leaning against the flour sacks, his color slowly returning as the saline drip worked its magic. He watched her interact with the babies, his expression unreadable. “You have a natural touch,” he observed quietly. “Most people would have run out the front door screaming.”

“Most people aren't three semesters away from an RN license and drowning in medical debt,” Ella retorted sharply, though there was no real venom in her voice. “And most people don't bleed all over a freshly mopped linoleum floor at two in the morning.”
A faint, humorless ghost of a smile touched Dante’s lips. It was the first time she saw past the terrifying syndicate boss to the weary father underneath. He reached out, his massive, calloused finger lightly brushing Leo’s tiny hand, and made a silent vow that anyone who put these children—or the brave woman caring for them—in danger would pay with their lives.
