Chapter 3 - The Mistress's First Mistake|

By midnight, photographs of Seline wearing the Donna necklace had reached every major family in the American underworld.
The image was accompanied by a message from Damian's office.
The Viscari Syndicate recognizes Seline Maro as its new Donna.
The announcement was intended to end speculation about Damian's marriage and establish Seline's authority before the next business quarter.
Instead, it created a crisis.
Kanti called Damian first.
"You have lost your mind," the old capo said.
Damian stood in his private office, watching Seline admire herself in the mirror.
"Choose your words carefully, Kanti."
"I have chosen them carefully for forty years. That is why I am still alive. What you did tonight was not a marriage decision. It was a declaration to every family that your word means nothing."
"Vivien's authority was symbolic."
Kanti laughed without humor.
"Then why did you need to take her necklace?"
Damian ended the call.
Seline turned from the mirror.
"He's old. The others will adjust."
"They always do."
"Then stop looking as if you've made a mistake."
Damian glanced at her.
For four years, Seline had been the woman who understood his ambitions without asking him to explain them. She had helped establish foreign banking contacts, introduced him to discreet investors, and convinced him that the old traditions were obstacles to modernization.
She had also assured him that Vivien's influence could be transferred without resistance.
Now resistance was spreading through the organization.
The next call came from the Romano family.
Then the Bellandi family.
Then three regional captains who had never questioned Damian's authority before.
Each asked the same question.
"Where is Vivien?"
Damian had no answer.
He sent security to the Viscari residence, only to learn that Vivien's belongings remained untouched. Her personal assistant had resigned. Her driver had disappeared. Her private accounts had been placed under a legal hold by an order Damian had never authorized.
At 1:15 a.m., Thomas Bell entered the office.
"We have a problem."
Damian poured himself a drink.
"Everyone keeps telling me that."
"The Donna succession clause has been activated."
Damian stopped pouring.
"What clause?"
Thomas closed the office door.
"Your marriage agreement contains an appendix. It was signed by you, Vivien, and three witnesses before the wedding."
"I signed dozens of documents."
"This one concerns the necklace."
Seline approached them.
"Explain."
Thomas hesitated.
Damian noticed.
"Speak."
"The necklace cannot be transferred to another woman by the husband alone. If the designated Donna relinquishes her position under circumstances that violate the succession covenant, authority passes to the original council until a lawful successor is confirmed."
Seline touched the necklace.
"That sounds like superstition."
"It is not superstition," Thomas replied. "The council controls the voting rights attached to several legacy companies. Without their recognition, the syndicate's legal structure could fracture."
Damian's face darkened.
"Then get the council to recognize Seline."
Thomas looked at him with genuine concern.
"They already have."
"Good."
"They've also requested an emergency assembly."
"To approve her?"
"No."
Thomas placed a single sheet of paper on the desk.
The heading read:
NOTICE OF REVIEW: DAMIAN VISCARI'S AUTHORITY.
Beneath it were seven signatures.
Seline read them.
Her fingers tightened around the necklace.
"They cannot do this."
Thomas looked at her.
"They can."
Damian stared at the signatures.
"Who requested the review?"
Thomas hesitated.
May you like
Then he answered.
"Vivien Ashcroft Viscari."
