Chapter 18 - The Wedding Was Never an Accident|

The revelation destroyed the last illusion Vivien had about her marriage.

She had believed that Damian's father supported their union because he respected the Ashcroft family and wanted to strengthen the alliance between the two houses.

The documents suggested something else.

Damian's father had known that Vivien was the designated custodian of the Donna trust. He believed that marrying her would give the Viscari family influence over the council.

He had encouraged Damian to pursue her.

He had arranged introductions.

He had quietly removed obstacles that might have prevented the marriage.

Vivien had been the prize in a political arrangement disguised as romance.

Gabriel watched her read the documents.

"Does this change what you felt for him?"

Vivien took a long breath.

"No. It changes what I understand about the people who benefited from it."

She remembered Damian's early kindness, the late-night conversations, and the way he used to ask for her opinion before making important decisions.

She refused to believe every moment had been false.

But she could no longer ignore how easily their marriage had become another instrument of control.

The documents also revealed that Thomas Bell had known about the arrangement from the beginning.

He had helped manage the legal structure that allowed the Viscari family to influence the trust without officially owning it.

Seline's involvement had come later, but Thomas had used the same strategy: identify a person who wanted acceptance, offer them access to power, and conceal the price until it was too late to withdraw.

"Where is Thomas now?" Vivien asked.

Kanti checked his phone.

"He has left the estate."

"Find him."

Before the order could be carried out, a message arrived from Thomas himself.

It contained a photograph of Helena Vale sitting in a chair, her hands resting calmly on her lap.

The caption read:

The original custodian is ready to confess.

A second message followed.

Come to the old chapel alone.

Vivien showed the messages to Gabriel.

"We're not letting you go alone," he said.

"I know."

She looked toward the chapel visible through the distant trees.

Thomas wanted her to believe she was walking into a trap.

Perhaps she was.

But she had spent too many years allowing other people to decide which truths she was allowed to hear.

The chapel had been closed since her father's death. Inside, dust covered the pews, and faded stained-glass windows cast fractured colors across the floor.

Helena sat near the altar.

Thomas stood behind her.

"You came," he said.

"You asked for me."

Thomas smiled.

"Your father used to say that you were the only person in the family who never mistook courage for recklessness."

"Then he knew me better than you do."

Thomas placed a folder on the altar.

"This contains the final proof of who ordered his death."

Vivien did not approach.

"Give it to me."

"Not yet."

He looked toward Helena.

"Tell her."

Helena's eyes filled with tears.

"I signed the order."

Vivien went still.

"What?"

Helena lowered her head.

"I did not kill your father. But I gave Thomas the authorization that allowed the conspiracy to proceed."

The chapel seemed to tilt around Vivien.

"Why?"

Helena looked up.

"Because I believed that if the Ashcrofts lost control of the council, the original families would destroy one another."

She took a trembling breath.

"I thought I was saving the Donna."

May you like

Vivien stared at her.

"And instead, you destroyed my family."
