Chapter 15 - The Seven Families Kneel|

The revelation spread through the underworld before noon.
The original Donna council had never been dissolved. Its surviving members had maintained a separate network, operating beyond the modern syndicates and their public agreements.
For decades, the Viscari family had believed it controlled the council's authority.
It did not.
The necklace had merely allowed its custodian to convene the assembly.
The true authority rested with the founding families.
At sunset, seven black vehicles arrived at Castell Verde Estate.
Each carried a representative from one of the oldest underworld families in America. Some were elderly women whose names had never appeared in public records. Others were younger heirs who had inherited obligations they barely understood.
They entered the ballroom without announcing themselves.
Then they saw Vivien standing beside the central table.
One by one, they approached her.
And one by one, they knelt.
Damian watched in disbelief.
Seline stood near the doors, her face pale.
Thomas Bell stepped forward.
"This is a theatrical display. It has no legal standing."
The oldest representative looked at him.
"Your legal standing was purchased with stolen documents."
Thomas opened his mouth.
She raised one hand.
He fell silent.
The woman turned toward Vivien.
"Your mother has told us what happened. We have waited long enough for the truth to return to this house."
Vivien looked at the kneeling representatives.
"Please stand."
None moved.
"Stand," she repeated. "I will not accept authority from people who believe respect must be demonstrated through humiliation."
The oldest woman studied her for a moment.
Then she rose.
The others followed.
Damian approached Vivien after the assembly ended.
"I never knew."
"No," Vivien said. "You never asked."
"I thought the necklace made you powerful."
"It made my responsibilities visible."
He looked toward the representatives.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I didn't need you to believe in my authority. I needed you to respect it."
Damian lowered his eyes.
For once, he had no argument.
Seline approached them.
"I owe you an apology."
Vivien studied her.
"Yes, you do."
Seline accepted the answer.
"I knew about the affair. I knew Damian was unhappy. But I didn't understand what the necklace meant. I believed that if I wore it, the council would have to accept me."
"And now?"
"Now I know that wearing a crown doesn't make someone worthy of it."
Vivien looked at her for a long moment.
"That is a lesson worth learning."
Seline removed a small envelope from her pocket.
"Thomas gave me this before the summit. I was supposed to deliver it to Helena if the vote failed."
Vivien opened it.
Inside was a photograph of a sealed room beneath Castell Verde.
The image showed a steel door marked with the old Vale family crest.
On the back, Thomas had written:
The original records are still here.
Vivien looked at Gabriel.
He understood immediately.

The room beneath the estate had never been searched.
And whatever lay inside it might finally reveal who had ordered their father's death.
