Chapter 17 - The Husband Who Finally Understood|

Damian listened to the recording in silence.
He had expected to hear an accusation against Thomas Bell or Helena Vale. He had prepared himself to discover that his father had been involved in the conspiracy.
He had not expected to hear his own name.
The recording continued.
"My daughter will marry into the Viscari family. I have encouraged the arrangement because I believe their son has the strength to change what his father has allowed to happen."
Damian closed his eyes.
Vivien watched him from across the table.
Her father had known about their future marriage.
He had believed Damian could be trusted.
The recording continued.
"But if Damian chooses power over the woman he loves, the trust must be withdrawn. The council must never allow him to control the Donna authority."
The recording ended.
Damian sat motionless.
"He knew," he whispered.
Vivien did not answer.
"He knew I might betray you."
"He knew you might choose yourself over the responsibility you accepted."
Damian looked at her.
"I didn't understand what I was doing."
"You understood enough to take the necklace in front of two hundred people."
He lowered his head.
For the first time, he did not attempt to defend himself.
"I loved you," he said.
Vivien felt the words stir something painful inside her.
"Perhaps you did."
"Does that mean nothing?"
"It means that love without respect is not enough."
Damian looked toward the window.
"I thought you would always stay. No matter what I did."
Vivien's voice softened, but her expression remained firm.
"You treated my loyalty as a guarantee that you would never have to earn it again."
He nodded slowly.
"I know."
For a long moment, they sat in silence.
Then Damian removed a key from his pocket.
"This opens the private records room in my father's old office. I found it after the funeral, but I never told anyone."
Vivien took the key.
"Why?"
"Because I was afraid of what I would find."
She studied him.
"Then why give it to me now?"
"Because I finally understand that protecting my reputation is not the same as protecting the truth."
Vivien accepted the key.
It was not forgiveness.
It was not reconciliation.
But it was the first honest thing Damian had offered her in years.
That evening, Vivien entered the private records room with Gabriel and Kanti.
They found correspondence linking Damian's father to the original trust fraud, along with evidence that he had paid Thomas Bell's family to alter the succession records.
But one file was missing.
The file that should have contained the final account of Vivien's father's death.
In its place was a note.
The truth was never hidden from the family.
It was hidden by the family.
Beneath the message was a date.
The day of Damian and Vivien's wedding.
Gabriel looked at his sister.
"Someone knew you would become the next Donna."
May you like
Vivien stared at the note.
"And someone arranged the marriage to make certain I would."
